ABOUT ARUNAN DHARMALINGAM
Arunan Dharmalingam is a Sydney based multi-disciplinary artist living with Autism. With limited verbal communication, art is one of the many ways Dharmalingam chooses to communicate his thoughts, feelings and interests to his community.
Drawing has been a focus of the artist for decades, and animals have often, in fact near aways, been the favoured subject matter. From 2013 – 2014, Arunan worked with Jerome, who introduced him to digital illustration. This allowed for a consistency with the level of simplicity in line work and colour selection that Arunan was already accustomed to, and the skills and techniques of this medium were picked up quickly by the artist, with his unique style and perspective, so obvious in his physical drawings, translating into this new method effectively. Arunan’s artwork is created using a Wacom Cintiq with Photoshop.
In early 2015, Arunan began working with artist George Tillianakis, who was interested in maintaining a consistency in Arunan’s work by continuing to draw his farm animals and sea life, but together they began to explore and experiment with drawing flowers, fruit and old cottage houses, in the style of still life.
In recent years, Arunan has continued to develop his drawing practice both physically and digitally, and has also developed a series of sculptural works, focussing on similar subject matter. Flora & fauna are sculpted in a 2D perspective but with limited dimension, and are arranged in various scenes.
SERIES STATEMENT
Arunan – series statement: These brightly coloured digital drawings give insight into Arunan’s world, living with Autism and celebrate his fondness of nature, animals and agriculture. Although mostly non-verbal, Arunan is able to express himself through his simple stylistic line-work, and careful colour selection. His dynamic farm scenes are bursting with playful, animated energy. A strong visual storyteller, Arunan lovingly re-creates whimsical scenes of animal life on a farm.
